Lawyers get paid three different ways
You need to determine which pricing structure is best
for your case.
Lawyers may charge by the hour
One way attorneys get paid is by the hour. Typically, the client
pays a lump sum up front which is paid to the lawyer's trust account
and drawn upon on an hourly basis. The advantage to this arrangement
is that the client may not pay for more time than is used. The disadvantage
is that the client needs to have the money up front and will not
know exactly how much legal representation will end up costing.
Lawyers may charge by the case
Charging by the case is the most common arrangement for criminal
defense. The attorney fixes a set price for the entire criminal defense.
The advantage is that it's good to know legal fees will not be higher
than the initial agreed-upon amount. The disadvantage is that clients
need to have the payment up front.
Lawyers may charge on a contingency basis
Contingency payment arrangements are common for personal injury
cases. The attorney agrees to take the case in exchange for one-third
of the final award. The lawyer may work for months or years without
charging the client. The advantage is that the client does not have
to have any money for initial payment and there is a built-in incentive
for the lawyer to pursue the highest award possible for the client.

his clients' financial interests, Phil Wakefield does not work on
an hourly basis. All criminal defense cases are charged by the job,
and costs vary depending on the severity of the charges, prior criminal
history and geographic location. (Many clients from outside the Puget
Sound region choose to hire him based on his reputation.)

injury cases, thereby assuring them that he is working for the highest
possible award for them.
